Getting fitter, stronger or simply staying active can be a challenge for even the most dedicated athletes!

Setting fitness goals will help you stay motivated and on track with your training. We asked experienced trainer Josh Blottin for his top 5 tips for setting fitness goals and how to stay motivated at any level of training.

1  Set a goal

Determine the overall outcome of what you want to achieve with your body or fitness and write it down in your diary or on your i-phone, on the bathroom mirror or there are numerous goal setting apps that can help with your planning!

Set short term fitness goals for each week of your program

Constantly challenge your body by writing down short term fitness goals that you will aim to achieve every 2-3 weeks. For example: “I will go 2 weeks without having 1 cheat meal” or  “I will bench 5kgs more on the bench press in 2 weeks.”

Surround yourself with daily motivation and visual inspiration

Follow your favourite athletes or motivational fitness pages on facebook, instagram, youtube and twitter and check it daily. This is great resource for daily inspiration, nutrition advice and training tips and will help you to stay motivated and on track with your fitness goals.

4  Keep it fresh

Too often people give up or quit simply because they get bored of the same routine. You don’t have to eat the exact same thing or train the same way every day. There are so many different meals you can eat and forms of exercise you can do, whether it is lifting weights, cross fit, group cardio classes, swimming, bike riding or running. Keep it fresh by changing up your exercise routines every few weeks. Just be sure to keep your intensity levels up!

Don’t get discouraged or upset

Change is not easy and doesn’t come easy. If it were easy, everyone would be walking around with shredded physiques and extreme levels of fitness. Remember the reason why you started and try not to compare yourself to others as everyone’s physique and fitness goals are different. Focus on being the best version of yourself and take time to look back on where you started and how far you have come.
